Working from home can be a most effective way to be more productive! Today’s open plan offices stop many people from getting their work done. The constant noise, phones ringing and colleagues interrupting can drive anyone to distraction! Many people would dramatically boost their productivity if they could spend some or all of their workday out of the main office and join the thousands of small business owners who work from home. However there are a few rules you need to follow to do this successfully:Establish a Routine?Decide on a starting and finishing time. Include breaks.Plan Your DayPrepare a ‘to do list’ each day and action it.Dress for SuccessIt’s okay to occasionally “chill out” in your daggy old clothes, however you’ll feel much better in comfortable casual gear. How you look will affect how you feel and how you perform.Clean out the ClutterKeep your work area clean and tidy. You’ll work from home far more effectively and reduce the stress levels.Organise Your Work AreaHave the right tools and systems to work with – an appropriate chair, desk, computer, filing system.Group Tasks TogetherDivide your day into similar activities. Make all phone calls in the morning and work on important tasks. Do errands later in the afternoon after the lunch-time rush or when you go to pick up the kids.Learn How to Say NO!Inform your family and friends of your working hours and that because you’re working from home doesn’t mean you’re ‘available’.Take Time Out for YouIt can be easy to lose yourself in your work. Take time to smell the roses…and make human contact. The Final WordNot everyone can work from home successfully. Some need the daily discipline and people interaction encountered in the office. However, for many others, being able to work from home has greatly improved their productivity and enhanced their lifestyle. They have more flexibility, more time and the opportunity to work much more effectively without all the usual distractions encountered in the traditional office environment.

A mistake that many home based business owners make is in waiting until their company is already up and running. So you want to plan your home based business website strategy as early as possible. You also want to put a great deal of thought into your home based business domain name. You want to make it easy for prospective customers to find you, so you may be better off choosing a domain name that describes your home based business product or service accurately. The reason for this is that people who are looking for lawn care services are going to do a search for lawn care services, so the domain name should relate as closely to that as possible. A hot trend these days is to put hyphens between each word of your domain name, but stay away from periods and commas. When it comes to actually building your home based business website, unless you’re extremely knowledgeable about web development and design, it’s a good idea to hire someone to do it for you. Well, the good news is there are several resources available to finance your home based business. You’ll have to do some research to find what’s available in your area, but this guide will show you several areas to begin looking to get the financing you need for your home based business. The Small Business Administration (SBA) is an excellent place to turn to for home based business financing. It doesn’t make grants that your home based business won’t have to pay back, nor does it make direct loans to small and home based businesses. Instead, the SBA guarantees loans given by private lenders. This reduces the risk associated with new business ventures and makes it easier to get lenders for your home based business. However, to get a SBA loan, your home based business must be a profit making one, and you will have to guarantee your loan personally. This means putting your personal assets at risk. Also, to be eligible for an SBA assistance and/or loan, your home based business has to be in the United States, and there’s other criteria that must be met. Still, if you’re looking for financial assistance to start your home based business, the SBA is a good place to start.Private grants are another type of financing you can look into for your home based business. There are many different types of grants, and there could likely be one for your home based business. The Internet is a great place to do your research. The grant process can take awhile, so if you decide this is the route you want to go for financing your home business, and your home based business meets the criteria of a grant, you will want to get started with the grant writing process as soon as possible. Also, you may need to hire a grant writer to help you. Grant requirements are strenuous, and there’s a great deal of competition for small and home based business grants. It’s well worth the time and effort to research grants, though, to try to get a grant for your home based business because the money given does not have to be paid back.Another type of home based business financing is through what’s called angel investors. These are investors who are willing to lend money to fledgling small and home based businesses, generally because they know a good thing when they see it and are willing to take some risks. Angel investors for home based businesses may not be that easy to find, but with some networking in your area, you’ll be able to locate several. Joining your local Chamber of Commerce is a good way to find angel investors. Also, talk to accountants who may be able to bring together several investors for your home based business. This happens a lot more often than you might think because investing in a small or home based business can provide a good tax break for many people. And then there are just some good souls out there who want to help others start home based businesses because they’ve been there themselves and managed to create successful home based businesses of their own.One final note. The only investors to be wary of for your home based business are those you might find in your own family. It just simply isn’t a good idea to borrow money for your home based business, or for anything else for that matter, from family members. There are just too many things that can go wrong in a financial obligation like this. A family member you borrow money from to start your home based business may pressure you to run the business their way, or worse, your home based business could go under and have to declare bankruptcy. It’s horrible to lose any investor’s money, but when it’s Uncle David’s, it’s much worse. So only borrow money for your home based business from family members as a last resort, and only if you’re certain you have a sure thing.Charles Fuchshttp://www.charlesfuchs.comhttp://charlesfuchs.blogspot.comI grant permission to publish this article, electronically or in print, as long as the bylines are included, with a live link, and the article is not changed in any way.
Two years ago, the words “multiple streams of income”, did not mean a hill of beans to me. My focus was elsewhere, moving up the corporate ladder. The technology field, at that time, was still somewhat lucrative. I felt comfortable with my “good, secured” technology job.Call me naïve, but, I believed I could ride the rough waters during the demise of the dot-com companies, “911″, and the corporate financial scandals, and still come out on top. Like the former employees of Enron Corporation, I quickly learned, through a lay-off, that dependence on one source of income was not the best model.I recognized how important it was for me to take charge of my financial future. The concept of having multiple streams of income appealed to me. It was refreshing, invigorating yet reassuring that these options were available to me and I no longer had to settle for a single source of income. From then on, I actively looked for and created opportunities to earn income from different sources. One form of multiple streams of income is passive income. A good definition for “passive income” bears close resemblance to the word “inactivity”, for it refers to earnings that require little or no substantive activity. Typical examples include royalty from published products, real estate rentals, residual income from a multi-networking business, or dividends earned from investments.I discovered that entrepreneurs are generally attracted to passive income as a business strategy to augment sluggish financial times, or increase their revenue base. For example, entrepreneurs crafting a line of product simply by converting speaking engagements into sellable entities such as tapes, e-books, CD/DVDs or articles. This is such a practical concept. So the logical question is how can you as a small business owner expand your revenues to include passive income. Here are the 5 plus 2 basics steps you should consider:1. Take a close look at the things you have to offer. It could be the skills or abilities you have mastered that are of value to others. Analyze each one carefully to determine how you can best market it. Review your findings with an unbiased third-party such as a coach to validate your discoveries and help you through the next phases. Always keep an open mind.2. Use technology to your advantage. Converting your skills and abilities, such as speaking engagement, into marketable products has been simplified and made affordable through the use of technology. For more information, tuned in on April 13th to hear Coachville’s Guest Expert Kathy Gulrich, talk about “Market Niche to Passive Income in 3 Easy Steps”, http://tinyurl.com/6ns8s.3. Review ways to convert those skills into saleable products. If you are a speaker with a message for self-employed business owners, consider packaging your talks for sale to a global audience. Be creative and experiment with different styles.4. Juggling multiple streams of income is not designed for the timid at heart. It requires much effort and persistence particularly in the early stages, but the payoff is worth it. Of course, balance is also important. Consider hiring a coach to help you set SMART goals, focus and stay on track5. Avoid the temptation to build multiple income streams simultaneously, or you may be in for an exciting ride. Know your limit and go at your pace. For some it may mean building your core business first and then adding on as you are able to. While for others, handling multiple projects at the same time is within their range.6. Don’t forget to update your business plan and goals to keep you on track with the direction you are taking.7. Enjoy the experience.
In my first article I introduced you to the nature of noise in the workplace and three methods of sound reduction and control. The three major methods of sound reduction and control are masking, absorption, and deflection. Now we will discuss these three methods of noise reduction. What they involve, how they work and which is best and why.Masking:Masking is covering the noise up. Usually with background music or white noise which is a low level of noise at many frequencies so that it cancels out some of the background noise.Masking is quite inexpensive and does work ok, in most situations, but some people do not like it at all and find it more annoying then the noise. In some cases this problem can be overcome by strategic placement of the background masking music or noise and or by using a mixture of the methods of noise reduction.Absorption:This method is probably the most popular indoor method of noise reduction. Absorption is a method where some material is used to reduce noise in the room by providing a surface that makes the noise energy weaken. This is usually accomplished by shaping the surface so that sound is reflected many times there by reducing the energy. Some newer foam materials not only bounce the sound around but actually transform the noise energy to heat energy making an even more effective noise reduction surface. These surfaces are usually covered with a cloth finish to match the interior and can be cubicle walls or even hanging barriers. Some can be custom finished and even can be in the form of pictures or logo’s.Deflection:Defection is commonly used out doors like along side of freeways or roadways such as block walls or earth walls or berms. Trees and hedges can even deflect and absorb noise, but as this is mainly for outdoor use we will not discuss it more at this time. There are many methods and it is probably best to use a combination of methods that work best for each unique situation.Chris HamptonArizona Acoustic Art
Since I have a website that shows people a sane and reliable way to build a small business from home in their spare time, I have to do a lot of research in this area. I’m consistently appalled by what passes for a “business opportunity” on the web these days. “Earn $30,000 per month without lifting a finger”, “For just $99 we will set you up with a complete business that runs itself!”. It’s really sad, but many many people fall victim to these scams and either wind up giving up on the idea of starting a real business at home, or at the very least loose some money and delay any possibility of success. It seems like it would almost be more honest for the web page at the other end of these bogus claims to be a page selling lottery tickets. I’ve got nothing against lottery tickets. You pay your money and you take your chances. Your chances are not very good, but then, the ticket doesn’t cost much either. With a lottery ticket at least you do have SOME chance of winning the big bucks. With the vast majority of sites claiming to have a “business opportunity” to sell you, the “ticket price” is much higher and there is literally no chance whatsoever that you will make any decent money. How can you tell the fakes and frauds from the real thing? It’s actually quite simple. Do you remember the line from “The Matrix”…”There is no spoon”. Well, this is similar…”There is no money tree”. Get that straight, and everything else falls into place. Does this website make claims that amount to trying to sell you a money tree? Could you easily translate their catch line into “send us some money and we will give you something that pays you thousands of dollars a month”? No mention of any work on your part. You just sit around and sip exotic drinks by the pool while the money rolls in. Never existed, never will. If somebody did own an orchard full of money trees, you would never hear about it. Why would he want to sell you one?Now that I’ve painted such a dreary picture of your chances for home based business success, I need to tell you that people can and do make money from home grown businesses. But they have to work at it. It takes work to build a real business. It takes work and know-how. On my site, I bust wide open the myths of this industry and provide all the know-how you need to build a real and profitable and sustainable business from home in your spare time.If that sounds like too much work…there is always the lottery.
