Starting at home has many advantages. When you start a business, like any venture in life, you want it to have the best chance for success. Starting one from your home has unique advantages. You won’t be paying rent on a store or office. And probably you won’t immediately need a separate phone with the charges for installation and monthly service. And you are already heating and lighting your home. Therefore, you avoid the burden of these additional monthly overhead costs. You’ll be using many things you already own so you can save money by not buying a desk, lighting fixtures, a water cooler, or the other furnishings people generally buy to set up a separate business location. If you need help with the actual work that’s involved, try to get members of your family to help you (more on this later). And you can start your business part-time while keeping your present job. Later as it grows you can make it your full-time occupation, and if you wish, move it out of your home into larger quarters…better suited to a business which may be growing by leaps and bounds.Presiding over your own domainA man’s home is his castle–and it can also be his “gold mine.” There are many people who make a very good living right from their home. It’s comfortable, it’s conveniently located (you can walk to work in about 15 seconds) and you can dress the way you like. You can arrange the furniture to make a work space that suits your exact needs and tastes. You can choose the hours you wish to work and, if you have the energy, initiative and ambition, you can even be in more than one kind of business!Working in your home has other advantages; you have no transportation expenses and you don’t waste time or energy in crowds or rush hour traffic. You don’t have to worry about getting along with a large group of co-workers or finding a decent place to eat lunch. And you don’t have to go out in all weathers, sleet and snow or broiling sun.But there are some drawbacks to working at home and the largest of these is self-discipline. You must learn to discipline yourself. Everyone who is his own boss has the problem of utilizing his time and energy most effectively and not wasting time on pet projects that are not essential to the business. Self discipline is easier to attain if one goes each day to a separate place of business because most business premises do not have the comforts, conveniences and distractions that one has in one’s own home. The danger in working at home is that the advantage of comfort and convenience can turn into a great disadvantage.Set up a definite work areaLater on we’ll tell you some tips on how to conduct business in general. But let’s first find a part of your house that you can use as your business or work area. It should be a spot that is comfortable but away from distractions. Your children deserve attention but not during your working hours (more on that later) So set yourself up far from where the kids usually play. Too close to the kitchen isn’t wise because you are too close to the “food or drink” temptation. A quiet spare bedroom can be ideal as can a finished basement or garage if they aren’t too hot or cold. You may need an extension phone put there and, indeed, after your business gets rolling you may want a separate line just for business. If you have a spare desk or table that’s fine, but a card table can do for a starter. Adequate lighting is necessary and a filing cabinet also is a good thing to have on hand. You can add whatever other business devices and equipment you discover you’ll need as time goes by.You and your FamilyIt will be necessary to explain to your children that even though you are at home, you are, in a sense “not at home,” that you are working. This does not apply to an emergency, of course, but for nearly all ordinary moments it means they are not allowed to disturb you. You may even have to lock the door that leads to your work area.On the other side, there is the situation regarding other adults in the household, from whom you might want some help from in running the business. This has been called the “honey-do” problem: honey, do this; honey, do that. It’s best to come to some understanding with your spouse (and any other adult in your home) about just how you are going to handle this problem. It’s quite sensible to desire the help of those other capable adults because they can take some of the burdens of the business off your shoulders. However, from both a business viewpoint and from the human relations viewpoint, it’s best to have a clear understanding with each of them as to what kind of things they will and should do (answer the phone, open mail, pack and ship merchandise, etc.) and what they definitely are not to do make payments to people without your authorization, make agreements, deals or contracts without asking you). Such advance agreements can avoid a lot of aggravation and make everything go much more smoothly.”Hello, this is Daddy’s business”You must realize that there will be some (charming) complications to running a business from home and one of those complications is when a fairly small child answers the phone for a business call. “No, this isn’t the Smith Company, this is my house” may throw a business associate calling your “office” for a loop, temporarily. Most people react quite graciously to this, but it does point up the advantage of having a business number that rings only in your work area.Getting temporary helpThere may be more work at times than you and your family can do yourselves. Your volume of business may be greater on certain days of the week, certain times of the month, certain seasons of the year. At those times you may need extra help to handle the work. Or you might need a bookkeeper or secretary or clerk one week a month to help you keep up-to- date on your record-keeping and paperwork. When you need such help, the most convenient way to get it is to hire someone through an agency that provides temporary workers. Manpower and Kelly Girl, for example, are two of the best known agencies in this field. Hiring though such an agency has these advantages: they will send a person who has the skills you require which means you won’t waste time training the person. The worker they send understands that the job is temporary and won’t make you uncomfortable by asking to be kept on permanently. And, because the worker is employed by the agency (not by you) the agency takes care of the worker’s payroll records, tax deductions, insurance coverage, fringe benefits, and so on. You are free from those responsibilities. The right business for youWhen selecting a home business you should consider these factors:* Is the service or product you intend to provide already easily available in your area? If it is not available and if there appears to be a need for it, these factors are in your favor.Consider all the things you own that might be used in some way as equipment for your business: a car or truck, a typewriter, a mimeograph machine, and so on. I you can use them, it will greatly lower your starting costs.* Is it a business that suits your personality and tastes? One that you feel good about, that fires your imagination? It should be. Enthusiasm can be a priceless ingredient in the formula for success! Home businesses that workYou must, of course, choose the home business that is right for you. There are many books that will give you long lists of potentially money-making businesses for you to consider. A relatively mobile porn short, but highly recommended, list of potential business ventures will be found in another of this series of reports entitled 37 Instant Moneymaking Part-time Businesses.Handwriting analysis by mail. A great little business to operate from home. First off, study up on the subject; it isn’t too difficult to learn, and it’s interesting. You will find lots of books on the subject at your local public library.Once you’ve started studying, you can start placing some small- space ads, in local papers, and in literary-type magazines, psychology magazines, and wherever else you think you can find the people interested in having their handwriting analyzed. Then you just sit back an wait for the letters (and checks, money orders and plain old cash ) to roll in. Be sure to keep a record of how much you get from which ad (by using a key, such as changing your middle initial in each ad), so you know which pull best. After you get more confidence in making rapid analyses, you can even give personal consultations in your home if you want to do this.Guaranteed lucky four-leaf clovers. It used to be that people thought they would be lucky if they found a four-leaf clover when they were walking in the fields. Now some smart farmer, who must also be a good businessman as well as a skilled plant biologist, has figured out a way to get exclusively mutants, so he can supply unlimited four-leaf clovers. You can cash in on this handsomely by buying a quantity of them and embedding them in clear plastic (casting resins and instructions can be obtained at any hobby shop), in the form of key rings, brooches and paperweights (or anything else you can create.)The real gimmick comes in the merchandising of them, because you should advertise them as guaranteed lucky genuine four-leaf clovers, with the slogan “If you don’t get lucky in the next year with this genuine four-leaf clover, we’ll give you your money back”. Within a year most people have at least one good thing happen to them, so you will probably get very few requests for money back. Instead, you are likely to have lots of satisfied customers who feel that now they have finally gotten lucky, proving that the four-leaf clover worked! For reasons that escape me now, I kept sort of a diary during myfirst full year of working at a home based business. It wasnothing close to being a complete daily diary, but was more of acollection of scribbles about things that I felt were worthy ofnote at the time. Since quite a bit of time has passed sincethen, I decided to revisit these notes. In no particular order, here are some of the things that I hadmade note of.Choosing the path…in the beginning, my enthusiasm was very high(perhaps too high?) and I was chasing off on several differenthome-based business opportunities at the same time (exhibitingthe “dog in a meat market” syndrome, I suppose) and not focusingmy efforts enough to be successful at any single one of them. Ifinally reigned myself in and focused on a single work at homebusiness opportunity. In other notes I find reference to emotional and/or psychologicalissues that I experienced and are probably typical for mostpeople when starting a home based business. When working at homea person can, at times, experience a feeling of isolation whichis probably brought on by the lack of interaction of a work forceenvironment. There were also periods of doubt in the early going…did I picka viable business opportunity?…am I doing the right things todevelop my business?…when will I start making a profit?, andso on.Many of the entries in my so-called diary had to do with theproverbial “two steps forward and one step backward” thing andthe ever-looming temptation to become discouraged. Although Ididn’t appreciate it at the time, it is now obvious that as longas you have more steps forward than backward you will eventuallyget ahead! Isn’t hindsight wonderful?Other entries reflect the fact that relatively minor events canseem huge in the early stages of developing a work at homebusiness and can really contribute to an emotional roller coasterride. For example, if you are just starting out and you have twocustomers/clients and you lose one…that’s a 50% drop! However,if you fast-forward in time to the point where you have hundredsof customers/clients and you lose one…that’s just a merefraction of 1%! Same event, just at a different point in time.Looking back on it now, some of the stuff I recorded now seemshumorous, but I’m pretty sure that was not the case at the timeI made the notations.
So you’ve decided to work from home, but you have one big problem….How do you juggle working from home and taking care of your child at the same time? At 16 months old my daughter is my executive assistant. Find out how you can make your child into an executive assistant.Crazy? When you’re working from home you learn how to set-up and organize your home office space. One of the things that is essential to this office, if you have little ones at home, is a place for your child! I’ve read a lot of articles that talk about making your home office a quiet space for you to go and work. I have a different perspective on this. Instead of making your office a space that your child shouldn’t be in, why not give them a place to work alongside of you? Crazy? Read on…..My Daughter’s a Work at Home Mom!O.K. So you’re asking, if I encourage my child to play in the same room I’m working in, how am I going to get anything done? One of the ways that your child learns as the grow up, is to imitate the actions of those around them. Especially you! Have you ever really stopped to look at how your child plays on a day to day basis? I was completely amazed to see what Melody does while not under my direct supervision. She’s a work at home mom! Allright, so that’s a bit of a stretch…but she parents milf porn her stuffed animals, and “works” throughout the day. I was astonished to see how much she really imitates my actions. I took this knowledge and used it to develop a play space that she has come to love. The Executive Secretary is In!I gave Melody her own office within my home office. My daughter loves working with me every day. I have set up a corner of my office that is just for her. She’s got her own little desk and chair set up right next to mine. The desk is packed with coloring books and crayons, puzzles and books. She even has her own phone! Melody loves sitting at her desk and “working” while I am working. She also has an easel in the office that has a magnetic board on one side with all different magnets. She loves playing with alphabet magnets. I also have a toybox with a lot of toys that she can play with throughout the day. She loves that she has a space that is “her own” that she can watch me and play alongside me while I work. The Boss Needs a Break Too!So my office isn’t the traditional office that you would find working in the “outside world”, and I often trip over toys on my way to work, but it is the perfect office for a work at home mom. My daughter is close to me all day long even if I am working. We even have a work schedule that we follow throughout the day. We take frequent breaks to play. She knows when to expect breaktime so she will be calmer in those times that I am working. I find that having a schedule that we follow really helps her to be happy throughout the day. Melody thrives on a schedule. She knows exactly what time lunch is even though she can’t tell time. At 11:00 each day she comes up to me and says Mommy, “eat eat.” The schedule keeps her happy and ensures that I spend a good amount of quality time with her each day and don’t get caught up in my work.My Little Executive AssistantIt’s really a win-win situation for the both of us. Throughout the day I’ll also give her little tasks to complete. Right now they are easy tasks such as putting the shapes back in her shape ball, or working on completing a puzzle. As she gets older I will start adding crafts and other things that will help her learn while playing in our office. She is my little executive assistant. I realize that this may not be a practical solution for everyone’s house, but take the concept, and take a look at your “office” to see if this might be something that you can incorporate into your life. It is a huge help in our house.
Let’s say you get sick of the rat race, and decide to start your own business. You do your research and set up the business. now the only problem is that orders are not coming as quick as you would like, and you begin to wonder if you made the right choice. You begin to have doubts. here’s what I have found that can help you through the tough times when you have what social scientist refer to as “critical days.”STAY FOCUSED…..Several years ago I was affiliated with a network marketing company. The company name isn’t important, however, what they taught, is. I would go to the meetings, and listen to the them “preach the gospel.” One thing that I learned was that if a person’s fear of failure is greater than their desire to succeed, then they will fail.Think about why you decided to start your own business in the first place. Maybe you felt overworked and underpaid. Maybe you felt unappreciated and just had enough. Maybe you just want to be rich. Whatever the reason, it was strong enough for you to make a decision. Stay focused and keep your eyes on the prize.WATCH THE COMPANY YOU KEEP…..I also learned that there are several people known as “dream destroyers” that can kill your enthusiasm and take your dreams away from you. When I was younger, my parents gave me 1000 reasons why I shouldn’t get involved in a business. They told me everything that could go wrong. What they should have done was tell me what could go right as well. People are scared of the unknown and when they see you doing things that they themselves can’t, or are not doing, they try to dissuade you.Look at the people around you. If they are not living the lifestyle that you would like to live, then they are no authority. PERIOD! If your uncle comes to you and tells you that he knew someone once who tried something like that 20 years ago, don’t let it get to you, remember that YOU are in charge of your destiny!!!DREAM-BUILDING and VISUALIZATION…..My sponsor is a wise man. This is part of why we are still friends today, even though our business relationship is over. He taught me that in order to really stay focused , we sometime have to find something that we want and “hold out the carrot in front of us”. For me, that carrot was car. Mercedes 500 S-CLASS. What he had me do was use my mind and visualize the car I wanted, the exact color, the model, the interior, the stereo system, everything. He would then take me to the car dealer and show me exactly what I had visualized.”Sit in it,” he would say. While I sat in this car and drooled all over myself, he went and talked to the dealer. He came back and with a straight face, handed me the keys and told me not to drive so fast.I almost had a heart attack. I mean I was 20 years old behind the wheel of a $100,000 car, I almost fainted. We drove it on the highway for about an hour.I got it up to 90MPH. Then he said “Time to go back”. Dream-build, It’s a really great motivator.GOOD THINGS COME TO THOSE WHO WAIT……Without a doubt, patience is on of the most difficult things for any Entrepreneur to learn. We want it when we want it, and that’s it. Even though we have heard that most businesses take five to six years to turn a profit,we think that shouldn’t apply to us. Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither is your business. Be patient. Let your eyes be equal to your stomach.I find that the older I get, the easier it is to be patient. Take George Clooney. George Clooney was on well over twelve T.V. shows before he got E.R. Whoever said that patience is a virtue was right.
For many of us, change can be a scary thing. When we are children, there is nothing better than meeting new friends and going to new places. But, when we become adults, change can be something that is less than appealing. From finishing school and going on to college or university to getting married and having children, our lives are nothing but life changing moments.Sometimes the one change that is the hardest to deal with is the change in our employment status, and one of the biggest career changes is the decision to go from being an “employee” to being your own “boss”, becoming a self-employed entrepreneur. For those that have that overwhelming desire to be a small business owner, the entire journey to success is something that creates a sense of energy and fulfilment. The roads that are followed bring an abundance of black porn information, continually adding to the entrepreneurial process and spirit.Visits to local small business centers can provide a wealth of support and encouragement. There is always flyers, newsletters and experienced staff to assist you with any questions or concerns.Another avenue that can be taken to contribute to your business’ success is becoming involved in networking groups. Most groups conduct weekly or monthly meetings, some more formal than others, which allow small business owners to share with each other their stories and experiences. It can create alliances that will benefit each business owner. For myself, a small business owner in Southern Ontario, Canada, the road to being an entrepreneur included the participation in the SEA (Self Employment Assistance) Program sponsored by Human Resources Development Canada. The SEA program offered, and is still offering, myself and my company a wealth of information and support. This program is available all across Canada. In Southern Ontario it is available in Brampton, Orangeville, and Toronto, as well as numerous other communities. The program consists of 10 weeks of in-class instruction which is performed by successful small business owners. The support then continues for one year with monthly networking meetings with the rest of the participants and one-on-one appointments with an instructor.Although this program is only offered in Canada, there are similar programs offered in most other areas, whether you are in the United States or anywhere else in the world. Check your local phone book or small business magazines for more information. For myself, the decision to become self-employed was something that just felt right at the time. I had spent a number of years running my father’s lawn care company from my home. During that time, I had helped friends, family and acquaintances with everything from typing projects for them to designing their marketing material. So when the time came for my dad to retire, it just seemed natural to do what I had been doing for many years….providing word processing and desktop publishing services Then, with the increase in the use of the Internet, I learned to design websites. So, if you are thinking of starting your own business, it is recommended that you do plenty of research. You have to see if the type of business you want to start is viable in your area. Is there a need for your product or service by the people or businesses in your community? Whether you will be looking for funding or not, you need to do a business plan. In the process of putting it together, you will have a better understanding of what you are doing and where you are going. If you need help with certain aspects when building your business, such as promotion or putting together influential marketing material, there are many companies that specialize in taking some of the pressure off of your shoulders. Not all will be listed in the phone books yet, so you need to keep your eyes and ears open for mention of these companies.Remember that not all small businesses are overnight successes. It takes plenty of work. Long hours with very little reward in the beginning. But, each time a new client or customer comes on board, you will feel butterflies in your stomach and a smile on your face. Use that feeling of exhilaration as your energy source and combine it with other relevant information that you acquire. Knowledge isn’t power…Action is!
