Take A Break!

Calgon… Take me away!Okay, sorry about that.. a bit of an inside joke. Or, was it? How many times a day do you find yourself muttering those words to yourself.I may be aging myself here but I think that sentiment is felt by everyone, at some point. As busy entrepreneurs, we need to “get away from it all” in order to rejuvenate our bodies and our minds.Our days, as home-based business owners, are filled with task after task, project after project, both personal and business. And, if we don’t take a little time to take a breather, we can end up burning ourselves out.How you choose to recharge your batteries is a personal choice. For myself, I make sure to take ‘family time’. When 6 o’clock (at the latest) rolls around, my computer goes into sleep mode and my brain officially switches to “life” mode. I don’t know what it is but, just the thought of relaxing (even if it is mixed with a few household chores) has a calming effect on me. It’s kind of like a winding down feeling.There are many other ways to help you calm your nerves and take a break:Get back to nature.Puttering around in your garden can make you feel very relaxed. Sure, pulling weeds and watering your plants may seem like hard work but the rewards from your efforts have a calming effect. Watching your plants blossom and flourish is a wonderful site.Curl up with a good book.After you have put the kids to bed, find a quiet place and open up a favorite book or that book you have always wanted to read. Winding down this way may go a little far and you may fall asleep. But, if that does happen, who cares? And just imagine what it will do for you.Go to the movies.Actually, why not bring the movies to you? You local video store has all the latest releases and most of the classics. Grab a healthy snack, curl up on the couch and pop the movie or DVD in. Again, if you fall asleep… so be it. Just pop that movie back in later, when you are more awake.Sit down to a special meal.In our busy lives, our schedules can sometimes cross paths and we may not have time to eat meals together. But, we need to! So, whether you want a romantic meal with your partner or a family meal without the TV turned on, be sure to mark it on everyone’s calendar and then just sit and enjoy each other’s company.Take a trip.Once again, it is important to take yourself completely out of the entrepreneurial setting. That means that you need to get away from home… the place where your office may reside. Whether it is a day out with the family, a weekend away at the cottage, or a week or two on a sunny beach, every little bit of R&R can have a rejuvenating effect.Soak your troubles away.One of the most relaxing feelings there is! There is nothing like a long soak in a warm tub or whirlpool. Even a sauna or hot shower can do wonders to relieve the tension.Take up a hobby or exercise.Have you always wanted to build birdhouses? Or, how about joining a gym? Why not start now? It may be helpful to start off slow so, don’t choose something that requires following a schedule. Eventually you can move on to taking classes or joining a sports team. Hobbies and sports can help to get your mind off of any worries you may have.Even sitting down in a quiet spot to write an article, like this one, can help ease frayed nerves.So, no matter how you choose to relax, please remember that you are entitled to some time to just put your feet up, at least for a little while. Taking a break can help you to relax and perhaps get a new perspective on things.

We’re talkin’ about the game of being an expert at what you do. These rules are unforgiving. Working At Home: The First Year Revisited

For reasons that escape me now, I kept sort of a diary during myfirst full year of working at a home based business. It wasnothing close to being a complete daily diary, but was more of acollection of scribbles about things that I felt were worthy ofnote at the time. Since quite a bit of time has passed sincethen, I decided to revisit these notes.In no particular order, here are some of the things that I hadmade note of.Choosing the path…in the beginning, my enthusiasm was very high(perhaps too high?) and I was chasing off on several differenthome-based business opportunities at the same time (exhibitingthe “dog in a meat market” syndrome, I suppose) and not focusingmy efforts enough to be successful at any single one of them. Ifinally reigned myself in and focused on a single work at homebusiness opportunity.In other notes I find reference to emotional and/or psychologicalissues that I experienced and are probably typical for mostpeople when starting a home based business. When working at homea person can, at times, experience a feeling of isolation whichis probably brought on by the lack of interaction of a work forceenvironment.There were also periods of doubt in the early going…did I picka viable business opportunity?…am I doing the right things todevelop my business?…when will I start making a profit?, andso on.Many of the entries in my so-called diary had to do with theproverbial “two steps forward and one step backward” thing andthe ever-looming temptation to become discouraged. Although Ididn’t appreciate it at the time, it is now obvious that as longas you have more steps forward than backward you will eventuallyget ahead! Isn’t hindsight wonderful?Other entries reflect the fact that relatively minor events canseem huge in the early stages of developing a work at homebusiness and can really contribute to an emotional roller coasterride. For example, if you are just starting out and you have twocustomers/clients and you lose one…that’s a 50% drop! However,if you fast-forward in time to the point where you have hundredsof customers/clients and you lose one…that’s just a merefraction of 1%! Same event, just at a different point in time.Looking back on it now, some of the stuff I recorded now seemshumorous, but I’m pretty sure that was not the case at the timeI made the notations.

Goal Setting for your Home Business

The ability to set goals and effectively motivate yourself to achieve them are two essential skills that will help you achieve success in you home business.To try and start a business without goals could be compared to throwing a baseball pitch, blindfolded in the dark. What would be your chance of getting your pitch on target? Never mind getting a strike-out. Unless you are very lucky it is unlikely that you will have any success without properly setting out goals.If when you start your home business, in what ever field it maybe, if you have no goals and aim at nothing, is it not unlikely that you will hit nothing and achieve nothing?To set effective goals there are a few things you need to know about yourself which will affect how you set your goals. You are affected by, the environment in which you live, your experience and knowledge, your attitude and dreams and visions for the future.When you set your goals you need to decide what you want and when you want to achieve each goal. You should spend time writing down your goals and display them in a prominent position where you will see them daily to remind yourself to stay motivated and focused. Cross off your goals once they’ve been achieved, adding new ones to ensure your business keeps growing.”Don’t set your Goals to low. If you don’t need much, you won’t become much”. – - Jim Rohn – -I’m sure you will have come across the SMART analogy, with regards to goal setting. It contains the most important concepts to consider and adhere to when setting your goals.Goals should be; Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time related.For example it would be unwise to set a goal of making $10,000 in a week, it’s just not a realistic goal for the average person, unless you have a lot of experience and knowledge in your field or receive help from someone who has these attributes. When you failed to reach this goal your motivation would suffer and you might start doubting your decision to start your home business.Before you start setting your goals I want you to write a list of all the things you want; whether it is a new car, watch, house, to send your kids through college or a successful home business, write them all down and say why you want them. When I did this I had a list the length of my arm and I’m still working through it 3 years on. By doing this it will help focus your mind and motivate yourself to succeed.Now set your goals, they need to be SMART and you need to set both short term and long term goals, and also daily goals. One of the best techniques I use is to set 6 goals before I go to bed for the next day and prioritise them so I know clearly in my mind what I have to do the next day.All successful people set goals and prioritise them in order of importance. Remember your time is your most important asset; you simply cannot afford to waste it.We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit. — Aristotle -When you are in business for yourself, you are the primary motivating factor, if your truly want your home business to succeed you will do whatever it takes to make it happen.By making goal setting a habit there is no reason why you cannot achieve excellence.

Any one of those “little” decisions could have a major influence on the future path of your life.For example, you are in a hurry and decide to cross the road at a certain point. A car comes hurtling around the corner, and knocks you into the air. Thankfully you are still alive after you land, but are taken to hospital and are there for a couple of weeks, at one point in Intensive Care. You are employed, but your employer is not sympathetic, will not pay you, and for a few days you lie there worrying about losing your job. You have no insurance, so how will you pay the bills?Was crossing the road at that point, at that time, a bad decision? On the face of it, yes, it was stupid to say the least. But what if, in the two weeks in hospital, you fall in love with a nurse? Later, you marry and have several wonderful children? Was that still a bad decision, crossing the road then and there?Not only did you meet your future spouse, the person in the next bed turned out to have some good business ideas they wanted to put into practice. You got chatting about them as your condition started to improve. The two of you found you saw eye to eye on lots of things, and it was clear that you would both benefit from the synergy of working together on a business project. The other person had the ideas and money in place, but needed you as a partner to take it forward. When you were both fit and well again, he subsidized you while the business was set up. It prospered, and within months you were earning 4 times your previous income. Was that still a bad decision, crossing the road then and there?That is fiction, but is it unrealistic fiction? No. There are probably many thousands of very similar stories. And there are countless millions of true stories about seemingly little decisions that have altered the course of people’s lives.What I have been referring to are almost random events. I say “almost” because the decision to cross the road was not random. An adult crossing the road like that had sufficient information to make a correct decision. They did not make use of their knowledge and information. As decision making goes, it was a bad decision, regardless of what random events followed.Making decisions in your every day business needs to be more focused, more scientific, and much more aware, than you may have been used to in your life as an employee. Most of us have, at some stage, passed through a zombie like existence of repetition, working for a company or other organization. It may even be that you have had little scope to make decisions other than when and where to cross the road, what to eat for dinner, what to watch on tv, and what to wear today. Now, though, with your own online business, there is massive scope for making key decisions, every day. How you do that will have a serious impact on the future of your business.I believe that just by being more conscious of your decisions, your business will benefit, and so will you. Relying on the business equivalent of crossing the road at the wrong time, meeting the love of your life and your perfect business partner, is not an option if your are serious about your business. You cannot rely on random events, although undoubtedly some random events will affect you in the future. Business is often a percentage game, and you want to make decisions that tilt the odds in your favour.Decision making in business is about bringing together as much relevant information as possible, in a structured and understandable way, and consciously reviewing that information before arriving at a decision. It is about assessing possible outcomes, probabilities, future trends, past experiences and all other relevant factors. Ignoring those factors may not put you in hospital, but would harm your business.I will cover elements of business decision making in future articles. Your local hospital may not be the place where they are currently waiting for you.

No, no! I’m not talking about “how to make money by selling underwear’s o­n the Internet” I’m talking about Jeff Paul, the super marketing guru of 90′s who shouted “How I Earn $4,000 a Day Sitting at My Kitchen Table in My Underwear?” But it’s a GONE story now. What happened to Jeff Paul, o­ne of the most successful students of “Dan Kennedy’s” the father of Marketing?If you were a subscriber of “Entrepreneur Success” or “Business Opportunities” in the early 98, you might have noticed Jeff Paul’s catchy ads, depicting him sitting at his kitchen and in his underwear talking over the telephone and counting money and ads like “How I earn $4000 a day sitting at my kitchen table in my underwear?” Jeff himself declared he makes 1000′s of dollars a day before his lunch! Those catchy, interesting and funny ads were run continuously for about 3 years in the early 98. But those ads were suddenly disappeared; Jeff Paul suddenly sunk somewhere in deep marketing competition.When I started exploring information about Jeff Paul, I heard/read many interesting stories. Much information is not available about Jeff’s childhood or about his parents.Jeff attended the University of Illinois where he studied anthropology. So I’m not sure of what direction he wanted to take in his life. He ended up dropping out of college and worked for his father’s retail store in Jackson Mississippi. He had problems with working for his father’s retail store and he was totally unhappy with his decision.So Jeff decided that taking night school classes in accounting might lead him to a better career and income. After a year of classes he moved back to Chicago and purchased an accounting franchise for $15,000 and met his business partner. That was the first chapter of “Joint Venture” in Jeff’s life!Unfortunately the accounting business didn’t last long because Jeff’s partner ended up stealing the company coffers. And the worst part is Jeff had naively co-signed an SBA loan which was being called due and payable in full, a whopping $204,000! That’s how destiny played in Jeff’s life.Jeff was down o­n his luck and about to give up o­n his dream of financial independence. He found an opportunity to meet and work with Dan Kennedy. (Dan Kennedy is highest paid marketing consultant in America. Dan will give you at least 100 new ideas to improve your current business if you meet him!) Jeff had signed up for o­ne of Dan Kennedy’s seminars as a last bastion of hope.Shortly thereafter, Jeff wrote his first successful direct marketing training course for Financial Planners and accountants. His company was called “Profit Plan Systems”. Jeff is more widely known for his mail order success course, How I Earn $4,000 a Day Sitting At My Kitchen Table in My Underwear.Maybe you can still buy this particular course from classified ads and display ads in “Biz Magazines” like Business Opportunities and Entrepreneur. Jeff’s ads was selling teaser version of his course for 20 bucks. It was really a glorified sales letter masquerading as a product. Anyway, from there you could order the complete course for about 200 bucks!Although “How I Earn $4,000 a Day Sitting at My Kitchen Table in My Underwear” does have some excellent gems of timeless direct marketing wisdom (like “Sell them what they want. Give them what they need.”), you are probably better served by getting your marketing education elsewhere! Why?The main reason is the quality of the course presentation. Basically the course was a re-purposed version of the marketing system he sold to Financial Planners. Ninety percent of the material was the same. This course was somewhat disorganized, was thrown together in a random manner! Pages were crooked (2nd & 3rd generation photocopies!) and had missing pages. The information presentation was disjointed. For example, it was hard to keep from getting distracted by the poor quality of the page copies.Jeff probably sold resale rights of his marketing course to other marketers who are simply photocopying seminar book pages, popping them in a 3 ring binder; making bad dupes of cassette tapes; placing national ads; selling it as a COURSE! The same “Copycat Marketing” formula!Whatsoever, Jeff Paul is widely respected for his direct marketing expertise. And he had great mentor like Dan Kennedy. Dan used to introduce Jeff as his favorite and most successful students in BIG Seminars!Jeff actually produced some NO BS great manuals, training videos, inspirations tapes etc. Some of Jeff’s books were actually pretty well written. Paul thinks that the internet is not a good place to market products because the average person o­nline is young and not financially qualified to buy much… but all that is constantly changing or changed now a days. Some marketers said Jeff Paul’s course is great and it really helped them. But the o­nly problem is that like many great systems, there are now far too many people doing what he teaches. Obviously Jeff was a very talented student because Dan took him under his wing and turned him into an advertising giantNow what I believe is Jeff Paul’s Marketing System must be great. But the problem is that he told the whole world about it a long time ago. And now I heard he has several hundred students doing the exact same thing he does. And these students are now teaching and selling his old material to others by writing the same basic type of course they bought from Jeff Paul. You can actually buy Jeff’s products in e-bay auctions at discounted rates. Will it work now? Don’t ask me!Like I said, Jeff and his course are great, but just outdated in my opinion. I searched for Jeff’s products reviews at Amazon. But Amazon’s database contains no information about Jeff’s stuffs. The fun part is Amazon has recommended me to buy Dan Kennedy’s stuffs!I recently heard that Mr. Fire Yanik Silver had an interview with Jeff Paul.
